During the 14th-16th centuries Cotswold wool commanded high prices which allowed the building of fine manors and churches decorated with beautiful carvings. The local limestone was ideal for this work as it was easy to carve when first quarried then hardened after exposure to the sunlight and the subtle colour changes of the local stone give the Cotswolds its unique characteristics today. Walking in the Cotswolds is a great way to explore with many circular walks taking in the villages and market towns with their tea rooms, antique shops and Morris dancers congregating at local pubs. There is also a national trail, the Cotswold Way which runs for over a hundred miles following the Cotswold escarpment from Chipping Campden in the north to Bath in the south passing through charming villages and several prehistoric sites.
