Kendal is known as the gateway to the lakes in the south and is famous for its Kendal mintcake a high energy block of sugar and peppermint oil. A few miles away is Windermere which has built up around the longest lake in England and after which the town is named. The Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole on the shore of Lake Windermere provides natural history and geological displays, exhibitions activities and lectures for all the family. As you explore the lakes whether it's by foot, cycle or even boat there are hundreds of mountains, crags and fells with four peaks over 3000ft and Scafell Pike at 3205ft the highest in England. Keswick on the shores of Derwent Water is a small lively market town and an excellent base for exploring the Northern lakes with cruises, walks and many activities in the area.
