The New Forest was formerly a Royal Hunting ground acquired by William the Conqueror in 1079 it would have originally been covered with trees but these were cleared before the Normans came for settlements and farms and due to the poor soil only heather and gorse have grown in many areas.
The area was only designated a Nation Park as recently as 2005 it has a remarkable landscape with a relatively large area of lowland habitats. The New Forest Ponies which are said to be descendants from the small horses of the Spanish Armada and will be seen roaming free at the roadside and through villages. With 150 miles of trails through the forest walking and cycling is one of the best ways of exploring there are lots of route maps and cycle hire shops available in the region. The main wooded areas of the New Forest are around Lyndhurst, Beaulieu in the South East corner of the New Forest is home to a motor museum and stately home. Lymington is a popular yachting town on the coast with cobbled streets and Georgian houses.
