The landscape goes from the high moorland Dark Peak in the north which takes its name from the underlying millstone grit an area which can be windswept and inhospitable but still a favourite amongst walkers especially on the Pennine Way to the southern limestone hills of the White Peak which have deep forested dales populated by stone villages and complex cave systems formed by the erosion of these hills over thousands of years. The former spa town of Buxton on the edge of the Peak District is a great base to explore the region with its old stone buildings, pump room and Edwardian opera house. Castleton on the northern edge of the White Peak is ringed by hills for great walking and is overlooked by Peveril Castle built to protect the king's rights to the forest. Several caves have been developed as tourist attractions in the surrounding area including two which are the world's only source of the semi precious stone Blue John.

Bakewell in the Peak District is most famous for its Bakewell Tart but is also a great starting point for many walks through the appealing landscape that make up its surroundings. Chatsworth House built by the Duke of Devonshire and the Gardens designed by Capability Brown are also within hiking distance and a very popular trip.
