The North Yorkshire Coast is the stretch of cliff edged shoreline that runs to the Scottish border with cute fishing harbours and stunning seaside resorts like Whitby which also is the starting point for two memorable stretches of the Cleveland Way for walkers. Helmsley in the west of the moors is a great base for exploring the area with many historic buildings including one of England's greatest Cistercian abbeys Rievaulx Abbey easily seen from here. The highest and wildest terrain is found in the central moors. The picturesque village of Hutton-Le Hole offers the family oriented Ryedale Folk Museum a living history museum with special events and displays all year round. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway was completed by George Stephenson in 1835 making it one of the earliest lines in the country and it still runs steam trains for nostalgic trips dropping off at several stations to explore the moorland.
